The Murdoch Press is a cancer on our democracy, let's fund an ABC newspaper
Oliver Yates, Independent Candidate for Kooyong, has said Australians deserves better than the Murdoch Press, and Australia needs a taxpayer funded, national newspaper, that gives Australians the facts they need about important issues.
“Australia needs better information to inform our democracy. The current national newspapers are becoming increasingly politically biased and just not up to the job. We need to properly fund the ABC and explore whether they can use their high-class independent content to create a national newspaper that can provide people with information and facts about the challenges we face.
“The ABC is one of the most trusted organisations in Australia. As print media diversity declines, cost efficient alternatives need to be considered.
“It’s just wrong that the Murdoch Press cheerleads for the Coalition, backing in their terrible policies, promoting denial of climate change and attacking their opponents.
“Part of the reasons the Liberals have so profoundly lost their way is because of the support and encouragement of the Murdoch Press for their hard-right wing policies, denying climate change, encouraging racism and the interests of their advertisers over the interests of the public.
“The Murdoch Press, which is clearly biased in favour of the hard right of the Liberal party, cheered on the destruction of Malcolm Turnbull, has stirred up issues which tear at the fabric of Australia and the safety and security of the citizens of the country. It has consistently advocated for the interests of the coal industry. They have therefore denied climate change and attacked anyone attempting to address it.
“To improve our democracy and our country, citizens need to have better information. The ABC is trusted, fair and balanced. With proper funding, it has the capability and professionalism to create a high-quality national newspaper that could be the pride of all Australians,” said Mr Yates.
