Speech to Lighter Footprints Candidates Forum
Good evening everyone.
Last time I addressed many of you, it was just before the State election. Our local community then sent a very clear message to Victorian Liberals in that election. Unfortunately that message has been totally ignored at a Federal level.
So, it’s time to send it again. And this time if I am successful, I hope to personally deliver it to Parliament in Canberra. We want action on climate change, and we want it now.
Tonight’s topic is: “Is climate change the issue of the moment”?
The answer is actually, no. The lack of action on climate change is unfortunately a symptom of a greater issue. It is frankly, a lack of integrity. Integrity: being honest and having moral principles.
If politicians don’t have integrity, they cannot implement effective policies to address climate change, or any other social issues our society faces. Climate change is the symptom of a failing political system, led by politicians addicted to donations and their self-preservation, above all else. They care more about their jobs, the opinion polls, and their political perks, than they do about you.
The need to address climate change is well understood. It is obvious. My credentials in the space are well known. We know how fast we need to act to reduce emissions and how to get there. The current Government’s policies won’t do the job.
We know what actions we must take, whilst protecting our economy and our trade exposed industries. We know we need to encourage other nations to act, by showing leadership and taking urgent action ourselves. We understand the costs, and we understand that the transition to a clean future is far less expensive than failing to act.
With the greatest respect for hard work of the current member of Kooyong, I do question his moral compass, which spins between pleasing big donors and internal factions, while sacrificing your future to promote his own.
Today in politics, it seems the more skillful you are at dodging questions and the more devious you are with your answer, the better you are as a politician. We deserve better than that. The voters of Kooyong are not fools, so let’s stop the games
Our member of Parliament recently spent $100,000 of our money to post a letter to everyone in this electorate. It was sheer propaganda, designed to give the impression that the Liberals are taking action and that he cares about climate change. It was just more spin. Let’s not be fooled. The Liberal party’s proposed climate solution package is no solution at all.
The letter was designed to give the impression that national emissions are going down. They’re not. In his letter and here tonight, he will totally ignore the fact that actual emissions have increased every year under this Government. Instead he will refer to differences in forecasts or per capital emissions. Just more spin. Simply, if actual emissions are rising, you are not likely to hit a lower target.
The Liberals claim that Snowy 2.0 will deliver 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy. It won’t, as it will take 2,400 megawatts to get the water up the hill, so it will actually use a net 400 megawatts. They recently confirmed that Snowy 2.0 will now cost twice as much and take 8 years to build.
They claim they will develop a national electric vehicles strategy. Yet this week, they’ve been out attacking Labor for attempting to do just that.
Australia needs leaders who tell the truth. We need leaders who have a vision. We need leaders with integrity.
He will claim that there has been “record investment in renewables” under this Government. But this has only occurred as a result of the Renewable Energy Target, a policy that this Government wanted to abolish. He will claim climate action under their Government in the name of the CEFC and ARENA - two entities they tried twice to abolish.
I offer a clear alternative. As an Independent, I intend to represent you with integrity and with a vision for this country. I want an Australia we can be proud of. Instead, we’ve become a pariah in our treatment of people seeking asylum and shamefully, a member of the axis of environmental evil.
So, I put it to you that whilst climate change is a critical issue, the appalling lack of progress in emission reduction, stems from a lack of integrity. Without integrity, without trust, without honesty - we can have no leadership. No leadership on climate change, no leadership as a nation.
Climate change will never be addressed by this far right Liberal party, because they’re on the take from fossil industry donors. This Government must be voted out. And past and present environment ministers, that have failed to act with integrity and take meaningful action on climate change, need to go with them.
