Frydenberg wastes your money to push out lies in Kooyong

Posted by Team Oliver Yates on 28 March 2019

Today, Josh Frydenberg MP has attempted to cover up his failed record on climate change, with a taxpayer funded letter to every person in Kooyong.

The letter, which includes an eight page leaflet on the Coalition Government’s so called “climate solutions”, fails to mention that during his tenure as Environment Minister, emissions have gone up every year.

“People deserve the truth,” said Oliver Yates, Independent for Kooyong.

“Every year, Australia is polluting more and more.

“This letter shows one thing, Mr Frydenberg knows that he is in trouble. He knows that the people of  Kooyong are sick of the lies and the lack of urgent action on climate change.

“I am running because I believe voters are smarter than this. The people of Kooyong know that you cannot wave coal around in Parliament on one hand and then with the other, deliver misleading material that claim that you care about climate action.

“Let’s be very clear, Mr.Frydenberg has failed to address climate change during his tenure as Minister for the Environment. And now, he’s engaged in an appalling abuse of taxpayer funds."

The claims, and the truth:

Claim 1 -The ERF has secured 193 million tonnes of emission abatement.

Fact 1 - This is contracted but not delivered, and are due to be delivered between 2015-2028, and represent about 14 million tonnes per year. Many of the so-called reductions comes from landfill gas projects AREADY in operation before the ERF started. 14 million tonnes is not even 1/2 a year’s emission from AGL (currently 44 million tonnes). It has done nothing.

Claim 2 - Snowy Hydro will generate 2000 megawatts

Fact 2 - There is no credible business case for this project. It was not tendered and could be another NBN or white elephant. As it is a pumped storage project, it will not generate ANY electricity but rather it will consume about 2400 MW to produce 2000MW.

Claim 3 - They will “Deliver the Battery of the Nation”.

Fact 3 - After the last election, the government tried to undermine this project out of spite, to punish voters in Tasmania for having rejected the Liberal Party, The government have now begrudgingly agreed to fund some development costs. The funding they are now providing is limited, and they have not committed to build it. They also will not be delivering any renewable energy projects in Tasmania, as they are being undertaken already by the private sector.

Claim 4 - The will “develop a National Electric Vehicle strategy”

Fact 4 - Australia has fallen miles behind in the electric space. Most countries are implementing their plans, not developing plans.

Claim 5 - “We are on track to meet responsible commitments which is 26-28%”

Fact 5 - This is a complete lie. Not even the government’s own department says they are on track and the Government’s own Climate Change Authority say Australia’s targets are “inadequate”, and we should target 40-60% reduction by 2030. To quote the Authority’s conclusion “Australia is vulnerable to climate change, and will face increasingly severe impact under higher levels of warming”
