Oliver Yates' statement on Liberal Party launch

Posted by Team Oliver Yates on 16 May 2019

The Liberal Party launch failed to acknowledge the chaos and dysfunction caused by six years of infighting, notwithstanding the absence of the two other Prime Ministers that served in this backstabbing, washed up government, said Oliver Yates Independent candidate for Kooyong.

“The Liberal Party will need to split after this election in order to rid itself of the right wing elements that have taken over the party. They have lost their mandate to govern and you cannot trust them anymore.

“The far right of the Liberal Party has far too much power. It’s why we don’t have an energy or environment policy. It’s why we have no comprehensive plan for infrastructure that wasn’t thought up five minutes before an election. And it’s why we don’t have a plan to deal with any of the major social problems we face.

“Over the entire campaign, we only seen the Liberal party represented on television by the remnants of their leadership team in Scott Morrison and Josh Frydenberg. The rest of the cabinet has been shackled or put into hiding.

“Josh Frydenberg and the Liberal Party have abandoned integrity. Mr Frydenberg opposed the banking royal commission. He opposed reform for pokies. He supported cuts to funding the ABC and SBS. He supported “reform” of the Murray Darling Basin, yet we have a million dead fish. He has put big donations from the coal industry ahead of the public’s demand for action on climate change. He has imperilled our manufacturing industry and hobbled our renewable sector. As Environment Minister, he has condemned the Great Barrier Reef to certain death. He couldn’t even get approval for his NEG policy within his own party. What he lacks in leadership, he certainly makes up for in self-interest. What he lacks in backbone, he certainly makes up for in Teflon. His failed policy causes a leadership spill and next thing Mr Frydenberg emerges as Treasurer and Deputy Leader. Alas, he is certainly no leader.

“It’s clear that the Liberals have lost their way. It is time to put Josh Frydenberg and his Liberal Party out of their misery. It’s time we restored integrity and decency in our politics. Our country is crying out for leadership and a moral compass on social and environmental issues that we can be proud of.

“Around Australia, Independents are seeking to bring politics back to a sensible centre. Imagine what we can do when we’re elected. I urge voters in this election to think Independent and vote 1 Yates," said Mr Yates.
