The people of Kooyong have an opportunity to make history in this election, but only if they vote strategically.
A new poll has shown that Josh Frydenberg, the current member for Kooyong, has lost around 16% support since the last election, and could face defeat, if you vote strategically.
Kooyong has always been held by the Liberal Party since Federation. However, the party has lost its way, and moved too far to the right, and been obsessed with infighting and instability.
They now have no plan to deal with climate change and have failed to act with integrity.
As a result, people are now looking for a better option, for a candidate who can genuinely represent them and the community, and address the issues voters are concerned about.
Oliver Yates, the independent candidate for Kooyong, will be sending every voter a letter describing how to vote strategically, in order to ensure Josh Frydenberg is removed from office.
The letter explains how the Australian electoral system works - that you need to number all the boxes, and that if your first choice is unable to get enough primary votes and is knocked out, then the full value of your vote flows through to your second choice. If that candidate is in turn eliminated, your vote will continue to flow through to your third choice and so on.
Given Josh’s primary vote is now down at around 40%, preferences are clearly going to determine who will win the electorate.
Now that Labor and the Greens have decided to preference Oliver Yates, the best way to ensure that we remove Frydenberg, is to vote 1 Yates, and then either Labor or the Greens and Josh Frydenberg further down the ballot paper.
Here’s how to vote strategically this election:
Firstly keep I mind that the How to Vote cards being mailed to you and handed out at polling stations are for guidance only. It is entirely up to you to determine how to place your preferences. It is important, however, that you vote 1 Yates to ensure that we remove the Josh Frydenberg.
If you normally vote for the Greens, Vote 1 Yates, and 2 Burnside.
If you normally vote for the ALP, Vote 1 Yates, and 2 Stewart.
If you normally vote Liberal, and are fed up with the party, then vote 1 Yates, and put the Liberals as far down the ballot as you can, as it will send a very clear message that the Liberal Party needs to come back to the moderate centre and properly represent the people in this electorate.
