Over a hundred and twenty people last night attended the launch of the campaign for Oliver Yates, Independent candidate for Kooyong.
Oliver Yates said the campaign had already received an enormous groundswell of support from the local community.
“People in Kooyong want change. They want someone who takes climate change seriously and acts with integrity.
“What we have now is someone who puts his personal interests first and acts as though the electorate is his birthright.
“Mr. Frydenberg has failed to act on climate change, paraded coal around in Parliament and then lied about the Government’s performance on reducing emissions.
“It reveals a lack of integrity. You should not be able to lie, to mislead his electorate and provide them with deceptive materials about your own performance.
“Every day we just hear more and more lies. He claims the budget is in surplus, it’s not. He claims they’ve created a million jobs, when we’ve had 1.2 million people come to Australia. And, he’s claimed unemployment is only at 5%, when over 13% of Australians can’t get enough work.
“I’m running for Parliament because Kooyong deserves better integrity than this. This electorate deserves someone who will stand for their interests, not simply roll over for the big donors and his Queensland colleagues..
“The Liberal party has lurched way too far to the right.
“And last night’s launch of my campaign showed that there’s a huge social uprising in Kooyong and a real appetite for change.
“There’s a lot more work to do to change Kooyong, but we’re ready. We’ve been buoyed by the hundreds of people who have come forward to support and stand with me in this campaign,” said Mr Yates.
