If you are voting in the next federal election, please look out for important information about strategic voting, which will be coming in your mailbox in a teal-edged envelope this week.
The letter from Oliver Yates contains information to help you understand how the preference system works and how to use your vote strategically.
It explains how if people vote 1 Yates, they can maximise their vote if they really want to change the current representative in Kooyong. It explains how their vote can send a strong message on climate change, no matter whether they might otherwise have voted for the Greens, Labor or are moderate Liberals.
“We are getting a lot of questions from voters about my preferences and how the system works to achieve the best chance of change in Kooyong. That is why we are sending this letter to all voters in Kooyong," said Oliver Yates, Independent candidate for Kooyong.
“I know your letter boxes have been bombarded with excessive propaganda from the Liberal Party, but this is our second and final letter from the Oliver Yates campaign and it does indeed contain important electoral information. You can easily identify our letter with my logo and colours, unlike the Liberals’ constant annoyance with deceptive letters in plain envelopes.
“Voters have a real choice in this election. It is important to understand that, in a hotly contested seat like Kooyong, it will be preference votes that drive the result. That’s why we are trying to explain how the preference voting system works. More and more people are recognising that they must vote strategically to ensure their vote counts.
“For the first time, everyone’s vote in Kooyong has power. This has been a grass roots campaign and the community is demanding a fresh independent voice in Kooyong, who will genuinely represent them and will stand up for integrity, climate change and a strong, sustainable economy.
“The major parties clearly benefit from people not understanding how the preference system works. It will not be good enough to just put Yates somewhere up the top on your ballot paper, if you really want remove the Liberals.
“Unless you Vote 1 Yates, there is a real likelihood that Josh Frydenberg will win. On the other hand, if you Vote 1 Yates and 2 for the party you’d normally vote for, then together we have a higher chance of removing Josh Frydenberg.
“Please look out in your mailbox for this teal letter, read it carefully and feel free to contact the campaign office on 0476 041 508 or email@example.com if you have any questions. You need to Vote 1 Yates and put the party you normally vote for second.
“Think independent. Understand how to get the most value out of your vote. And send a message that this Kooyong community will no longer be taken for granted. Together, we can make history if you Vote 1 Yates."
